Numbers were even for this frame. With their backs to the wall the Allies initially adopted a more defensive posture, staying close to the F2/F3 area. Once again the battle was one of attrition in the air, with the Axis fighters taking a heavy toll on the Allied defenders. The Axis used their 109s primarily in an air-to-air role, with 190s slipping in for Jabo attacks before climbing up to engage Allied aircraft. After an hour an a half of combat the Axis had only destroyed 4 of 14 AAA positions at F3, but the Allies were out of pilots. Without opposition, the Axis were able to close and capture the airfield at F2 and then F3. From there they moved their attacks to the F84 airfield on the island of La Galite. This proved a bit tougher nut to crack with the Axis losing 3 aircraft to AAA. Locating all the AAA was difficult and as was done at F3 the Ju 52s elected to drop troops before the airfield was closed. AAA killed many of the troops, but gave away the AAA positions. Although sufficient troops reached the tower to destroy it this occurred before the field was closed. One otto manning an MG fought to the bitter end and was not silenced until after all paratroops had attacked the tower. As a result, the field was not captured and Otto was awarded a posthumous MoH. Allied 6 pilots, 34 sorties RCAF: muzz--, yukone, -deak- 4th: jedijc, WLDBIL 23rd: -split- P-400: 10 sorties; 1 FW 190 shot down; 5 aircraft lost. P-38F: 17 sorties; no kills; 6 aircraft lost. Hurricane 2b: 7 sorties; 1 FW 190A-4 shot down; 2 aircraft lost. Axis 6 pilots, 46 sorties 352nd: juice=, redsgt, vokker, =wilz=, osker- Knights: okdoc- Bf 109G2: 22 sorties; 3 P-400, 2 P-38F, and 1 Hurricane IIb; 3 aircraft lost Fw 190A-4: 13 sorties; 2 P-400, 3 P-38F, 1 Hurricane IIb and 2 trucks shot down or destroyed. 4 aircraft lost. Ju-52: 11 sorties, 2 airfields and 1 other field captured, 1 aircraft lost. Frame 4 Scoring Axis scores 13 points for Allied fighter losses. Allied scores 8 points for Axis fighter and Ju 52 losses. Series Summary Axis score 70 points for Allied aircraft losses and 140 pts for controlling 14 airfields, for a total of 210 pts. Allies score 29 pts for Axis aircraft losses and 10 points for controlling a single airfield, for a total of 39 pts. Series was an overwhelming Axis victory. |
